Our style of training both the horse and rider is a result of competitiveness, classical correctness, and safety. We teach with purpose, understanding and discipline.
Here at HillCrest Farm we teach with a very classical style and include a strong foundation in dressage, where both horse and rider discover what it means to be supple, rhythmical, and balanced. We see all too often, the hunter that has to be run into the rail to get a lead and leans through turns like on a motorcycle. Not only is that incorrect, but it can be dangerous.
As a horse travels through a turn unbalanced they tend to speed up as they lean, making for a perilous turn, even in good footing. With a slightly elevated shoulder, supple back and swinging legs the horse is not only traveling in a pleasing way for both the judge and rider, but the balance point has been moved from the back of the shoulder or elbow to just behind the girth (loading weight more on the hocks and allowing for more scope from the horse over fences.
Though the horse may be dragging itself around on its front end, usually has tight knees, often times they lack scope and jump in a ‘belly scraping’ form- limiting the height they are capable of jumping.)

Beginner lessons will start in the barn learning how to properly and safely
catch, groom, and tack the rider's horse. The instructor will then walk with the
rider out to the ring where they will go over everything from safety to basic riding
technique. As the rider progresses he/she will be able to do these task such as
catching, tacking and grooming his/her horse on their own. This will allow for more
ring time in the private lessons.
The time that is spent between the instructor and your rider is very
important time and we ask that there not be any distractions as to the rider may
miss something their instructor is telling them regarding safety and or information
about the horse. There are many swings and chairs around the property that give
you great views of the riding rings. We also have a lounge that has heat and AC that
you are welcome to spend your time while you wait for your rider to make it out to
the ring.
Ridding attire is a very important part of your rider's safety. Also it helps for
the instructor to see your rider's position on the horse, which is very important.
